Synopsis of Red Sorghum

The film is adapted from two novellas "Red Sorghum" and "Sorghum Wine" published by Mo Yan in 1986. Because of a mule, the parents of "my grandma" Jiu'er (played by Gong Li) want her to marry a 50-year-old leper who owns a winery. When Jiuer was getting married in a sedan chair, he was intercepted by a robber on the way. One of the men carrying the sedan chair, Yu Zhan'ao (played by Jiang Wen), fought off the robbers, and Jiu'er and he began to like each other. Three days later, Jiuer returned to his hometown to visit his parents. The man carrying the sedan suddenly rushed out of the sorghum field and snatched away Jiu'er. They meet outside a sorghum field. When Jiu'er returned to the winery, she found that her leprous husband had died. "My grandma" supported the Li family's shochu workshop. Soon Yu Zhan'ao officially became "my grandpa" and created an original method of brewing eighteen red wines. During the Anti-Japanese War, "my grandfather" and "my grandmother" teamed up to compose a tragic song.
