Synopsis of The Rain People

In the spring of 1968, Coppola filmed "The Rain People". The original idea came from Coppola's childhood memory. After a quarrel with his father, his mother ran away for three full days and stayed at his aunt's house for two days. However, his mother refused to reveal her whereabouts the previous day. It was much later that his mother told him that she had been in a motel and was terrified. Twenty-nine-year-old Coppola led the team from New York, planning to walk west until everyone felt that it was far enough. Coppola used a camper van with a built-in splicing machine. Mrs. Coppola and her children drove a Volkswagen van to follow the filming team, and the family stayed at a local motel that night. Men, including Coppola, were not allowed to grow beards to show a good image and to easily obtain local assistance for filming. This trip lasted four months and visited 18 states in the United States. Coppola said: "We used an unusual filming model to shoot "Rain Clan". It was just a caravan of people that could go anywhere.
