Synopsis of Underground

The film shows the director's understanding and complex emotions of the Yugoslav nation through the legendary lives of the three protagonists - the intellectual and speculator Ma Gao, his friend Heizai, and their common lover Natalie. Although the film is two and a half hours long, it does not feel lengthy at all. The whole film is full of whimsy and has a strong sense of surrealism. It is a veritable epic film. Although the plot of the movie is somewhat absurd, it accurately depicts the social conditions of Yugoslavia during World War II and boldly exposes the unknown truth behind the heroic deeds of some speculative war heroes. The tone of the film is humorous and ironic, and it is also very lively, relaxed, and cheerful. You can even watch the film as a comedy. The characters in the film have very unrestrained and flamboyant personalities, and the film is filled with the passion of the creator. Director Emil Kasturica's genius in handling epic themes is undoubtedly revealed. Due to the film's profound allegory, many critics compared the film to the 1995 Russian "The Poisonous Sun". Emil Kasturica himself also won the Best Director Award at the Venice Film Festival that year.
