Wittgenstein

Synopsis of Wittgenstein

This is a modern-style drama that introduces the life and thoughts of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951), who was born in Vienna and studied in Cambridge. His main interest lies in studying the nature and limits of language. The film uses the simplest black background, all investment is spent on costumes, actors and lighting, and the composition is like a dark Enlightenment painting. Wittgenstein appears as a young boy whose youth was repressed, and his family are shown wearing Roman togas. A series of small scenes describe his life from childhood, to World War I, and finally to his work as a professor at Cambridge working with Bertrand Russell and John Maynard Keynes. Director Derek Jarman used some dramatic sketches and imaginative tricks, such as the appearance of Martian dwarfs, to represent Wittgenstein's aristocratic manners, Jewish background, and homosexual tendencies.
