Synopsis of Repast

A common people's drama about an ordinary couple. It describes the daily life of the lower class in the suburbs of Osaka, showing the frustrated mentality of a childless housewife (played by Setsuko Hara). Hatsunosuke and Michiyo, a couple living in Osaka, are visited by their niece from Tokyo. Machiyo, who had been doing housework at home all day long, was dissatisfied with the unrestrained and frivolous behavior of his young niece, and was tired of the mechanical chores around the house, so he returned to his parents' house in Tokyo and took this opportunity to start thinking about his own lifestyle. "Rice" is adapted from the original work by Hayashi Fumiko. It is an excellent psychological depiction melodrama, using the least plot and the most expressions to depict the characters. A classic work of common people's drama, it ranked second among the top ten in the "Film Weekly" that year.
