Synopsis of A Comedy of Murders

Mr. Verdoux (Charlie Chaplin) used to be a bank clerk. He lived a quiet but happy life with his wife Mona (Mady Correll) and son Peter (Allison Roddan). With the advent of the Great Depression, Mr. Verdoux lost his job. With a family to support, he lived on the streets with nowhere to stay. His despair was palpable. By chance, Mr. Verdoux obtained a magical poison that could kill people invisibly. With this "weapon", a wonderful plan was born in his mind. Soon, Selma (Helene Heigh), Lydia (Margaret Hoffman), Gronet (Isobel Elsom) and other rich but brainless women all became Mr. Verdoux The innocent souls of his subordinates, and their large sums of property, all went into Mr. Verdoux's pocket.
