Battle of Britain

Synopsis of Battle of Britain

In the early 1940s, on the eve of Germany's invasion of Britain, Baron Richter of Switzerland suggested to British Ambassador Kelly to adopt a peaceful attitude, because resisting the Nazis was tantamount to hitting a stone with an egg. However, Kelly refused to accept his suggestion and declared that Britain would fight to the end. Britain was in an extremely dangerous situation at the time. The army suffered heavy losses in the just-concluded Battle of France. There were only 780 artillery pieces, 160 anti-tank guns and 200 tanks left in the UK. The Air Force also suffered heavy losses in the battle, losing about 1,000 aircraft and 435 experienced pilots. RAF General Dowding had sensed that a war was imminent and needed more planes and pilots. Soon after, Prime Minister Churchill announced that the Battle of Great Britain had officially begun.
