Synopsis of The Promise

Fifteen-year-old Yi Ge grew up in a world where evil was not serious and under-the-table transactions were the normal order. One day, an illegal West African worker hired by his father fell from a building and was dying; his father let him bleed to death in order to avoid being punished and tried to conceal the truth. Before the hired man died, Egg made a promise to take care of his orphans and widows. Since then, his carefree world collapsed, his pure loyalty to his father was no longer there, and his sense of guilt and justice was both sunny and gloomy. The Dardenne brothers use the current current ills in Europe as the plot framework: immigration waves, multi-racial living, illegal labor, etc. A simple moral awakening, through strong textures, details and smooth hand-cranked photography, leads the audience into the world of marginalized people on the Belgian border, reviving the brilliance of realism.
