Synopsis of Ballad of Narayama
There is a Mount Narayana in Shinano, and people from nearby mountain villages have to go to Mount Narayama when they reach the age of seventy. Sixty-nine-year-old Alei (played by Tanaka Kinuyo) still has two things that she can't let go of: one is her 45-year-old son Tatsuhira (played by Takahashi Teji) who became a widower last year; the other is her eldest grandson Kasakichi (played by Ichikawa Dango). ) always laughs at his strong teeth in front of the villagers. On the annual sacrificial day, Aling, who was waiting for her new daughter-in-law Ayu (played by Mochizuki Yuko), cruelly knocked out two front teeth on the stone mortar. During the rice harvesting season, Kasukagi brought the pregnant Osomatsu (played by Keiko Ogasawara) into the house and urged her grandmother to go into the mountains early. Unlike Kasukagi, the kind-hearted Chenping is reluctant to let his mother go into the mountains. However, faced with the increasing population and insufficient food, Chenping had no choice but to comply with his mother's wishes and carry her back to Narasan Mountain before the New Year...
