Richard III

Richard III

Synopsis of Richard III

Laurence Olivier's third Shakespeare production was "Richard III", which he directed and starred in. Alexander Korda convinced Olivier to reprise the role that had won him acclaim at the Old Vic Theater in the 1940s. This role is considered to embody Olivier's finest acting skills (rivaled only by the 1955 stage production of Macbeth and the film The Entertainer). During filming in Spain, an archer's arrow accidentally struck Olivier in the ankle, leaving him limping. Fortunately, Richard III happened to be crippled during this part of the film. The film gained a good reputation, but was a commercial failure. Kodak sold the rights to the American television network NBC, and Richard III became the first film to be shown simultaneously in theaters and on television. The film received extremely high ratings on NBC, leading some to deduce that more people would see it on television than all the people who had seen the stage version of Richard III in the history of the show.
