Synopsis of Drunken Angel

In post-war Japan, Sanada (played by Joe Shimura) is a poor community doctor who likes to drink. He is good at treating tuberculosis. One day, the underworld leader Matsunaga (played by Toshiro Mifune) came to him for treatment due to an injury on his hand. Unexpectedly, Sanada noticed the symptoms of tuberculosis. He advised Matsunaga to go for an X-ray examination, but Matsunaga was unwilling to accept the fact that he was sick. Instead, he cursed Sanada and started arguing. However, Matsunaga's symptoms became more and more serious after he returned. After taking a X-ray, it was confirmed that it was indeed tuberculosis. Despite his stubbornness, he still accepted Sanada's treatment. However, Matsunaga's gangster brother Okada (played by Reisaburo Yamamoto) came out of prison. He gradually replaced Matsunaga's position in the gang and owned everything. The terminally ill Matsunaga could only make a desperate move...
